Winter 2008 Advance Course Information This information effective for winter 2008. Check with instructor the first day of class for any changes. Instructor: Miriam Ellis The object of the course is to read various significant texts and study the changes that took place when the written word was adapted to another art form and enhanced by musical expression. The syllabus for 2008 will consist of these texts: The Barber of Seville, by Caron de Beaumarchais; The Marriage of Figaro, by Caron de Beaumarchais; Green Grow the Lilacs, by Lynn Riggs; Pygmalion, by G.B.Shaw; Carmen, by Prosper Mérimée. We will view adaptations of these works for the stage, film, opera, musical theater, and/or ballet. For example: from Beaumarchais, Rossini composed The Barber of Seville, a comic opera; Oklahoma, the musical, was based on Riggs' work; My Fair Lady was taken from Shaw's play, etc. Students who have sufficient knowledge of French may read Le Barbier de Seville, Le Marriage de Figaro, and Carmen in the original French and write their papers in that language. The course will be conducted in English and will meet on Thursday, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at Cowell. Three short papers and a final project/term paper will be required.
