190C. Contemporary U.S. Literature: Postcolonial American Pacific

Course Description:

A senior seminar organized around books that deal with the geo-materializing Pacific Rim cities of Honolulu, Los Angeles, and San Francisco in some kind of postmodern/ postcolonial edgy new way.

The required texts:

  • Kathy Dee Banggo, 4-Evaz, Anna (Tinfish Press via Susan Schultz).
  • Rob Wilson, Pacific Postmodern (Tinfish Press via Susan Schultz).
  • R. Zamora Linmark, Rolling the R's (Kaya Press)
  • Mike Davis, City of Quartz (Vintage Books/Random House).
  • David L. Ulin, ed., Another City: Writing from Los Angeles.
  • Alexandra Chappell, ed., City By the Bay: San Francisco in Art and Literature (San Francisco Museum of Art/ Universe Publishing).
  • Bob Kaufman, Solitudes Crowded with Loneliness (New Directions Press).
  • Jack Spicer, The Tower of Babel: Jack Spicer's Detective Novel (Hoboken: Talisman House Publishers)
  • Pamela Lu, Pamela: A Novel (Berkeley: Atelos Press).

This is roughly the order is which these books will be assigned for the course. These books will be available for purchase at Literary Guillotine Bookstore in downtown Santa Cruz.
