12A. Service Learning

Course Description:

Students in Service Learning (Kresge 12A-01, call #34806) perform six hours of volunteer work in the community with the nonprofit organization of their choice, such as the Santa Cruz AIDS Project, The Familia Center, the Homeless Garden, the Walnut Avenue Women's Center, Juvenile Hall, the Resource Center for Nonviolence, or the Ark High School. Students keep a running account of their experiences and write a research paper and final reflection. In class, we consider students' relationships with their organizations, staff and clientele; theories of social change; our motivations; and what we gain through volunteer work. Students often claim that the volunteer experience changes their lives, their majors, or their career goals. This is a three-unit course that may be repeated for credit.
