A survey course in Hindustani (North Indian) and Karnatak (South Indian) music
covering the Raga (modal system) and Tala (metrical system) as they have developed
in the two traditions. Consideration is given to the historical development
of the music from Vedic chanting to the modern Raga system, social functions
of the music throughout history, and instrumental and vocal forms with an emphasis
