80. Sexual Revolution and Social Change in French Cinema

This course examines key points of cultural transformation through the art of French film makers. Students will study the forces leading to social change, paying particular attention to transformation in notions of gender and gender roles. Students will view selected feature films, as well as docudramas from French television, dating from the silent films of the 20s to the present.

We will examine social events leading to changes in sexual and social mores from the politically turbulent time of the thirties through the Resistance, and the sexual revolution of the post war years. .

Students will a write a brief critique of films and take two short exams on information concerning the development of French cinema as presented in lectures. As a final project students may opt to create a short original scenario for a film based on a person or event illustrating the notion of transformation and change in political or social arenas.

Knowledge of French is not necessary as lectures, required reading and discussion will be in English.

Films are in French with English sub-titles.

This course satisfies a T4 requirement for General Education.
