SCIC 106B: Advanced Techniques in Natural Science Illustration:

(Please note that previous completion of SCIC106A is NOT required, as all new techniques will be fully demonstrated in class.)

 

WEEK 1

Demonstration of pencil on film technique.

Introduction to various measuring equipment and techniques.

Make Plexiglas grids, begin pencil on film project.

 

WEEK 2

Work in class on pencil on film project.

First critique, on pencil on film project.

Demonstration of ink wash technique.

Begin ink wash project.

 

WEEK 3

Work in class on ink wash project.

Guest speaker discussing ergonomics, work habits, & exercises for illustrators.

 

WEEK 4

Second critique, on ink wash project.

Demonstration of B&W scratchboard technique.

Guest speaker, presenting color scratchboard techniques.

 

WEEK 5

Work in class on scratchboard project.

Discuss article illustration project.

Field trip, destination to be announced.

 

WEEK 6

Third critique, on scratchboard project.

Sign up for individual meetings about article illustration project.

Begin rough sketches for article illustration(s).

 

WEEK 7

Discussion of portfolio preparation, business cards, self promotion, etc.

Review rough sketches for article illustration(s).

Begin preliminary drawings for "".

 

WEEK 8

Demonstration of matting and framing techniques.

COURSE SYLLABUS: Winter 2000

Week 1: January 4& 6

Tues: Introduction to course and materials.

Th: Introduction to colored pencil technique.Bring sharpened colored pencils, white drawing paper and toned canson paper, specimen to draw. Comparison of toned and white papers.

Week 2: January 11 & 13

Tues: View first colored pencil drawing.

Introduction to "microhabitat" project. (Due: Thurs, Feb 2)

Th: Colored pencil on drafting film. (To be completed in class.)

Come prepared with specimen, preliminary drawing, colored pencils, Duralene or Denril drafting film, and other colored pencil basics.

Week 3: January 18 & 20

Tues: Be prepared to work in class on "microhabitat" project in progress.

Th: Continue microhabitat in progress.

Week 4: January 25 & 27

Tues: Introduction to watercolor technique. Demonstration of washes, dry brush, etc.

Come prepared with watercolor supplies, and a few half sheets of watercolor paper, small specimens and photographs modeling a variety of textures and colors. Introduction to watercolor texture assignment (Due: Tues, Feb 10)

Th: Guest speaker: Jen Christiansen of National Geographic Magazine.

Week 5: February 1 & 3

Tues: Critique of "microhabitat" project.

Th: All day field trip to the Legion of Honor, San Francisco: Study composition, color, light & shadow from the masters.

Week 6: February 8 & 10

Tues: Guest speaker: TBA (Frank Ippolito, staff illustrator at the American Museum of Natural History, NY, will demonstrate gouache (opaque watercolor) techniques.

Th: View watercolor texture project. Intro to final project (Due March 10)

PORTFOLIOS DUE for mid quarter review.

Week 7: February 15 & 17

Tues: NO CLASS. EXCHANGE DAY

Th: Critique of watercolor project.

Week 8: February 22 & 24

Tues: Bring roughs for final project. Peer feedback. Work in class.

Th: Advising Day

Week 9: February 29 & March 2

Tues: Be prepared to work in class on final project.

Th: Work independently on final project.

Week 10: March 7 & 9

Tues: Work in class on final project.

Week 11: March 14

Th: Critique of final project.
