Week 1: January 7

Th: Introduction to course and materials.

Introduction to colored pencil technique.

 

Week 2: January 13 &15

Tues: View first colored pencil drawing.

Bring sharpened colored pencils, white drawing paper and toned canson paper, specimen to draw. Comparison of toned and white papers. (To be completed in class.)

Introduction to "microhabitat" project. (Due: Thurs., Jan 29)

Th: Colored pencil on drafting film. (To be completed in class.)

Come prepared with specimen, preliminary drawing, colored pencils, Duralene or Denril drafting film, and other colored pencil basics.

 

Week 3: January 20 & 22

Tues: Be prepared to work in class on "microhabitat" project in progress. Project should be approximately halfway to completion at the start of class.

Also: Special effects with colored pencil.

Th: Introduction to watercolor technique. Demonstration of washes, dry brush, etc.

Come prepared with watercolor supplies, and a few half sheets of watercolor paper, small specimens and photographs modeling a variety of textures and colors. Introduction to watercolor assignment (Due: Tues, Feb 3)

Week 4: January 27 & 29

Tues: Come prepared with watercolor supplies and specimens. (Feedback on microhabitat project.)

Th: Critique of "microhabitat" project.

 

Week 5: February 3 & 5

Tues: Critique of watercolor project

PORTFOLIOS DUE for mid quarter review.

Th: Introduction to acrylics and assignment (Due: Thurs, Feb 24)

Come prepared with acrylic supplies, a few sheets of watercolor paper or illustration board, and a specimen to paint.

Week 6: February 10 & 12

Tues: Come prepared with acrylic supplies and specimens to paint. In class exercise.

Th: Work on acrylic project in progress.




Week 7: February 17, 19 & 20

Tues: NO CLASS. EXCHANGE DAY

Th: *Guest speaker: Frank Ippolito demonstrates gouache technique.

Fri: *Special ALL DAY gouache workshop with Frank Ippolito from the American Museum of Natural History.

 

Week 8: February 24 & 26

Tues: Critique of acrylic project.

Introduction to final project. (Due: Thurs., Mar 12)

Th: Work independently on final project.

Week 9: March 3, 5 & 6

Tues: View preliminaries for final project. Be prepared to work in class on final project.

Th: Work independently on final project.

Fri: Special guest: John Dawson, nationally recognized science illustrator will present his work and discuss color techniques.

Week 10: March 10 & 12

Tues: Work in class on final project.

Th: Critique of final project.

Turn in portfolios for final review. (All work to date.)
