[LTFR-131-01] LTFR 131/230 The Middle Ages: "Epic and Romance" Instructor: Sharon Kinoshita
La Chanson de Roland Le Couronnement de Louis La Prise d'Orange Raoul de Cambrai Chrétien de Troyes, Le Chevalier au Lion (Yvain) Chrétien de Troyes, Le Chevalier de la Charrete (Lancelot) Jean Renart, Le Roman de la Rose ou de Guillaume de Dole Guillaume de Lorris, Le Roman de la Rose Readings in modern French translation, with occasional references to Old French. Lecture and discussions primarily in French. French majors will do all written work in French; non-majors are welcome to write in English. Where traditional criticism often views epic and romance as stages in a development literary history ("from epic to romance"), we will rethink these genres as different responses to a range of socio-political institutions and practices undergoing transformation from the mid-twelfth through the mid-thirteenth centuries: the feudal bond, conceptions of warfare and "chivalry," marriage, inheritance laws, feudal monarchy. This course assumes no previous knowledge of the Middle Ages but requires a willingness to engage with topics in medieval social and political (as well as literary) history.
