Course Description

This course will introduce you to a variety of dramatic works of the twentieth-century, giving you a foundation of significant works in different styles and from different cultural and political moments.  We will, through discussions and assignments, expand your abilities to read theatrical texts analytically and imaginatively.

Assignments

  • Attendance, Participation, Weekly papers (35%)

Attendance and participation is mandatory.  Weekly one-page papers are due every Monday.

  • Paper (5-7pp) (20%)

The aim of the paper is to extend and deepen some aspect of the material covered this quarter.  I will provide some paper prompts.  If you have another idea for a paper, you must clear it with me first.

  • Theater Review (2pp) (10%)

The aim of the review is to expand your ability to critically engage with live performance.  It will cover one Theater Arts production.  Guidelines for writing a review will be distributed in section.

  • Final Examination (35%)

The exam will include identifications, short answers, and an essay.
