154. Philosophy in Literature

Course Description:

This course will consider philosophy in and as literature. Readings will include works by: Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Melville, Tolstoy, Heidegger, Borges, Agamben, Sebald, and others.

Three papers, two exams.

Appropriate for 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year students who have had at least some introductory course work in philosophy, and/or for non-freshman students who have had some exposure to literary theory and criticism.

190I. Studies in Religious Philosophy: Wittgenstein

Course Description

A seminar focusing upon Wittgenstein's uses of religious trope and comparison. The entire Wittgenstein corpus will be in play, also sources by others on various tangents.

Regular contributions to seminar discussion are required. Each student will offer a report to the group and submit a final paper (3000-4000 words) on some topic as follows:

W. and classical mysticism; W. on ritual; W. on the "superstitions" of philosophers, W. and Augustine; W. and Kierkegaard; W. on psychoanalytic interpretation; W. on the classical proofs of religion; W's accounts of temptation, testimony, and "aspect-blindness"

Limit 12 students, instructor's advance permission required.
