124A. European Novel: 18th Century to Modernism

Course Description:

This course will consider three great novels from the European tradition that explore and examine the way individuals conceive of social reality and react to its changing stresses:

• Laclos: Dangerous Liaisons
• Stendhal: Charterhouse of Parma
• Tolstoy: Anna Karenina

Novels written in languages other than English will be read in translation. Combined lecture and discussion. Two written exercises during the quarter.
