Music 1A: Women's Chorale Music 1A

This class is a performing music ensemble made up of women from across the campus who love to sing. Music majors as well as students from all other disciplines have participated in the past.

Some knowledge of music notation is preferred; a brief audition determines placement in the group. Auditions will be held Monday, March 29 in the Music Center Rm. 145. Please check the Ensemble Bulletin Board across from the Women's restroom on the lower floor of the Music Center to sign up for an audition time. No need to prepare a solo. The audition will consist of brief vocalizing and simple sight reading.

On May 22, the Women's Chorale will present a concert of contemporary music by American and British composers in the new Recital Hall at UCSC.

Music 1C: Concert Choir Music 1C

This class is a mixed-voice vocal ensemble which presents concerts every quarter, sometimes combined with the University orchestra. Music majors as well as students from all other disciplines are encouraged to audition. Male voices are neede in particular.

Music 11: Introduction to Western Music

A study of selected masterworks in relation to the periods which they represent. Emphasis upon the listening experience and awareness of musical style and structure. Illustrated lectures and directed listening.

Music 80E: History of Jazz

Designed to provide students with a thorough and comprehensive background in the history and roots of jazz as a musical style from the late 19th century to the present. Essential jazz styles and traditions are discussed through lectures, required listenings, readings, lecture demonstrations, and film presentations.

Music 80J: American Folk Music

Surveys American folk music, both instrumental and vocal, by region and period. Approach is primarily through listening. Previous musical experience helpful, but not required.

Music 80V: The Music of the Beatles

NEW SPRING 1999 COURSE ON THE BEATLES

OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS!

The most significant group in the history of popular music, The Beatles spanned the gamut of styles from hard-edged R & B to sophisticated art-rock. This course explores their work in detail, in its own terms, and in the historical/cultural/technological contexts.
