German 1B: Accelerated Beginning German (Continuation)

This course is designed as the accelerated continuation of German 1A
(Winter Qtr.). As such, it continues to introduce students to the German
language and culture at the first-year level. It is designed for students
who have successfully completed German 1A or its equivalent- 1-2 years of
high-school German or 1 semester of college-level German. Students who
have completed German 1 or German 2 at UCSC may also take this course.

Successful completion of German 1A and German 1B is roughly equivalent to
completing German 1-2-3- or one year of college-level German. Students who
complete German 1B may enroll in German 4 (Fall Qtr.).

Emphasis in German 1B is placed on the continued development of
beginning-level competence in the four basic skills: speaking, reading,
writing, and understanding. Of these, slightly more emphasis is placed on
reading than is the case in our normal German 1-2-3 track. Through group
work in class, and individual work at home and in the language lab,
students build an introductory, working knowledge of pronunciation, basic
German vocabulary, and German grammar. In addition, students are introduced
to basic information regarding the geography and culture of the
German-speaking countries. Video material is used where appropriate to
augment the topics discussed in class.

This course begins with Chapter 9 in the text Deutsche Sprache und
Landeskunde (4th ed.) by Crean et al. By the end of the quarter, we will
have covered much of the material in Chapters 9-16.

Course Requirements:

1) Regular attendance and participation
2) Completion of daily written homework assignments
3) Completion of language lab assignments
4) Occasional Vocabulary Quizzes
5) 3 Chapter Tests
6) 1 Oral Interview
7) 1 Final Exam

German 3: Beginning German 3

This course is is designed for students who have successfully completed German 2 or its equivalent (1-2 years of high school German--in the recent past). Its goal is to further the knowledge of the German language and culture that students gained in German 2. In this course as well, emphasis is placed on mastering beginning-level competence in the four basic skills: speaking, reading, writing, and understanding. Through group work in class, and individual work at home and in the language lab, students increase their working knowledge of pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.

The cultural readings in the text and other readings supplied by the instructor further students' knowledge of the culture of the German-speaking countries. Among the additonal readings in this course are four fairy tales and a short story ("Ohne Gepaeck" by Doris Doerrie).

Video material is used where appropriate to augment the topics discussed in class.

After an initial period of review, the course begins with Chapter 13 in the text Deutsche Sprache und Landeskunde (4th ed.) by Crean et al. By the end of the quarter, we will have covered approximately the material in Chapters 13-18.
