LIT 42B Student-Directed Seminar: Alternative Communications

A study of literature, drama, and film in relation to non-traditional styles of communication. Emphasizes the idea of "disability" as "ability." Focuses on the functions of deaf and blind characters in both literature and drama, and on deafness and blindness as symbolic constructs.

The following is the tentative syllabus for the course.

Week 1:

Introduction to the course.

The role of the blind prophet in society - Oedipus

Oppression and determination - Mother Courage
