Course Description

This course will consider three great novels from the European tradition that examine the way individuals conceive of social reality and react to its changing stresses:

• Laclos: Dangerous Liaisons
• Stendhal: Charterhouse of Parma
• Tolstoy: Anna Karenina

Novels will be read in English translation. Combined lecture and discussion.  One section meeting per week.  Two written exercises during the quarter.
