Fall 2006 Advance Course Information This information effective for Fall 2006. Check with instructor the first day of class for any changes. Instructor: R. Goff Course Description This is an introductory course in Continental European philosophy focusing upon the mid-20th century philosophical movement called existentialism, looking first at some of its sources in 19th century philosophy and also at some of its consequences in late 20th century and present-day writers. Themes and topics to be discussed: selfhood and self-knowledge; existential psychology; authorship and communicability; ethics beyond idealism and rationalism; the historical status of philosophy, hermeneutics (theory of interpretation). Readings will include works by: Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Tolstoy, Heidegger, Sartre, DeBeauvoir, Merleau-Ponty, Benjamin, Wittgenstein, Austin, Levinas, Foucault, Lyotard, Irigaray, and others. There are no prerequisities, and the course is open to first year and transfer students up to the limitations of classroom capacity and T-A allocation. Required weekly discussion sections of less than 25 students each will be held. Course requirements Attendance at all sessions; midterm and final exams (short answer questions) covering all lectures and readings, and two critical essays, 1500-2000 words each. In order to pass the course, a student must pass three out of the four course components, i.e., two exams, two papers.
