[OCEA-080A]

80A. Life in the Sea

Instructor: Allison Gong

General Description
We will spend the quarter examining the plants and animals that live in the sea and their habitats. Because we live within the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, our discussions and lab activities will emphasize local marine inhabitants, although we will not neglect exotic locations such as coral reefs and polar seas. We will begin by studying the physical properties of the earth and the oceans and how they affect life in the sea, then move to the organisms themselves, covering all of the major groups from microbes, marine plants, invertebrate animals, and vertebrate animals. The third section of the course will cover the different marine habitats, from the intertidal to the deep sea. We will end the course by discussing human impacts on the oceans and ocean conservation.

Pertinent Dates
The first day of lecture is Friday, September 24. Labs do not meet this week. Labs meet for the first time the following week, September 28-30. Enrollment in a lab section is mandatory. You will not pass the class if you are not enrolled in a lab section.
