The class will explore different
aesthetic options of famous Latin American masters of the short story. It will
include authors such as Quiroga, Borges, Cortázar, Gorodischer, Monterroso.
Among the different types of writing to be explored are fantastic, detective,
metaliterary, social critique, historical, philosophical, etc.
1) The course will provide
an analytical overview of the short-story in Latin America: its concept, theory,
and modes of analysis.
2) The class will introduce students to the great variety of Latin American
writing and its irreducibility to one or two limited traditional topics.
3) It will also further develop students' abilities to do textual analysis in
Spanish.
Midterm paper: (5-7 pages)

Oral report (8 a 10 minutes): 10%

Final paper (8-10 pages) 30%
The oral report will be
a short (10 to 15 minutes) presentation on a particular text following the attached
format (see Guide for oral presentations). The written reports (one every two
weeks) will be type-written, double spaced, 1-2 pages of critical responses
to the previous readings. The mid-term paper should be a first attempt at dealing
with the problems to be analyzed on the Final Paper. It should also develop
a preliminary bibliography towards the final paper. The final paper itself will
be an original reading of one of the texts read, analyzed in relation with some
of the texts and problems discussed during the course. Therefore, it should
not be a summary of them.
