An introduction to the major authors, periods, and themes of Italian literature, from the Middle Ages to the present; close reading of texts, intensive practice in spoken and written Italian. We will examine examples of the short story, plays, and a short novel. Among authors to be read: Calvino, Pavese, Morante, Pirandello, Boccaccio, Carlo Goldoni, Natalia Ginzburg, Erri De Luca. The class will focus on several recurring themes central to Italian identity: the North vs. the South, gender roles and the family structure, and WW II and the Resistance movement. The class will be held as a seminar; students will be encouraged to speak in class, to put on a play, and to prepare brief oral presentations. There will be a series of short (2 pages) papers and a final paper (6-8 pages). Several video productions will be shown.
Course conducted in Italian.
Prerequisite: Italian 6 or equivalent.
Course required for Italian
Language Studies majors; strongly recommended for Italian Studies and Italian
Literature majors.
