190C. Studies in Contemporary U.S. Literature: Memoir

Fall 2002
Instructor: Paul Skenazy

Course Description:

This is a course on contemporary United States memoirs—some published as fiction, some as autobiography, some as essays or portraits or poetry. The main theoretical approach is creative: we will learn about writing by writing. The main writing will be work on a memoir fragment of your own, which you will develop through weekly exercises and in-class and at-home assignments. We'll be working on revision and working in writing groups reading each others' pieces throughout the quarter. You are not expected to be or want to be in the Creative Writing major or even have ambitions to become a "Creative Writer." The point is to help you learn about writing and Lit by connecting what you do as a reader and critic with what writers do when they inhabit the other side of the pen and computer keyboard, creating and shaping their work.
