Thermodynamics of Organic Free Radicals: Radical Stabilization, Bond Dissociation Energies, Resonance and Electronic Stabilization

Week 2

Kinetics of Organic Free Radicals: Rate Constants of Radical Processes, "Radical Clocks," Persistent Radicals

Week 3

Methods for the Generation of Free Radicals: Thermal, Photochemical, Redox

Week 4

Free Radical Chain Reactions: Tin Hydride Based Methodologies

Week 5

Free Radical Chain Reactions: The Barton Method, and Atom Transfer

Week 6

Stochiometric Free Radical Reactions: SmI2 and other Metal Based Reactions

Week 7

Control of Stereochemistry in Free Radical Reactions

Week 8

Radical Reactions in the Synthesis of Complex Targets, Tandem Reactions

Week 9

Persistent Free Radicals, Controlled Polymerizations

Week 10

Free Radicals in Biology: Amino Acid Radicals, Bergman Diradicals, Radical Damage to DNA, etc.

There will be no single text for the class: the bulk of the material covered will come from the scientific literature (including review articles). In addition, the following texts will be utilized:

Student performance will be evaluated by a Midterm, a Final Exam, and a special projects paper.
