144D: Jewish Writers and the American City*

Course Description

An examination of some major Jewish writers and their responses to the American city. Major writers: Henry Roth, Saul Bellow, Bernard Malamud, J. Kaplan, Philip Roth. A look at Yiddish and other minority writers, and including sociological and historical materials on the American city. There will be films and, as well, this year, a discussion of how American writers have viewed Israeli cities.

160L: 19th Century French Novel in Translation

Course Description

This course will read, in English translation, four major 19th century French novels, one each by Stendhal, Balzac, Flaubert, and Zola. Format: combined lecture and discussion. Written work to be done in English.
