This course examines several key moments in asian american and pacific islander history--in particular, chinese exclusion, japanese american internment during wwii, and recent claims for sovereignty among native hawaiians. we will take these three moments under study this quarter to better understand how small minority groups can greatly impact the larger contours of race relations, civil rights, and constitutional rights in american society. some knowledge of asian american history and/or american history is helpful but not a prerequisite.
