Porter Core Course--Transfer Student Section

Porter College is offering one section of the college
Core Course expressly for new transfer students. Porter 80
is a small, writing-intensive class focusing on the rela-
tionships between culture, memory, and personal identity, as
expressed in the arts. In addition to meeting in seminar,
core course students participate in writing groups and view
films/performances on campus. While much of the writing
work is analytical, students are also asked to develop an
autobiographical creative project over the quarter.

This course is recommended for all new transfer stu-
dents. It is an excellent choice for those who wish to
improve their writing skills in a small group setting with
other new transfer students. In addition, Porter 80 satis-
fies three general education requirements: Writing-intensive
(W), Ethnic Studies (E), and Topical (T4). Unless you have
finished the complete series of community college courses
known as IGETC, you will need to complete a Writing-
intensive course at UCSC. Non-IGETC students who transfer
with fewer than 105 quarter credits will need a Topical
course as well.

Academic Preceptor and filmmaker Bob Giges is the
instructor for the transfer student section, Section 13.
Texts in recent years have included Sherman Alexie's The
Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, the graphic
novel/comic Maus by Art Spiegelman (who will be visiting
UCSC in the fall), and Luis Valdez's play Zoot Suit. The
class meets Friday in seminar (9:30-10:40 AM), Monday nights
for films, performances, speakers (8 PM), Monday or Wednes-
day in section (9:30-10:40 AM), and at one other time in
writing group. You will choose your writing group and
Monday/Wednesday section at the first meeting of the course,
Wednesday, September 22nd 9:30 AM in the Porter Dining Hall,
the day before fall quarter classes formally begin. This
course is offered only in the fall quarter and is limited to
24 new Porter transfer students who have satisfied the Sub-
ject A requirement. To enroll in this course, use the call
number 95194 (if TELESLUG rejects your enrollment, it may be
because the system does not know that you have satisfied the
writing prerequisite, Subject A. If you think this could be
the case, contact Bob Giges via email at otom@cats.ucsc.edu
or phone 831-459-2864).
