Class is limited to 8 undergraduate students and 10 graduate students. Graduate students are formerly accepted to the Science Communication Program. Undergraduates are selected based on science and art experience as well as demonstrating a strong interest in the field. To be selected, undergraduates must pick up an application from 124 Crown and return by 5/18. Applications are also acceted on the first day of class. Students who miss the first application deadline should come to the first day of class. SYLLABUSINTRODUCTION: First class: Intro to course and materials Course guidelines. Researching subjects.
WEEK ONE: Preliminary drawings. *Bring: Pencils, erasers, paper, tracing paper, dividers, magnifying lens and specimen to draw. -Exercise: Completed preliminary drawing. (Due 10/2)
View preliminary drawing. -Light on form. Graphite techniques. Transferring drawings. *Bring: Pencil supplies, drawing paper, transfer paper, specimen. -Assignment: Shaded pencil drawing (Due 10/7)
WEEK TWO: 10/7-10/9 Read text: Chapters 1 - 6 Critique -Intro to pen and ink *Bring: Pen and ink supplies, tracing paper.
Stipple drawing. *Bring pen and ink supplies, transferred drawing, specimen and/or source material. -Assignment: Stipple drawing in pen and ink. (Due 10/14)
WEEK THREE: 10/14-10/16 Parallel line drawing. *Bring pen and ink supplies, tracing paper. -Assignment: Parallel line drawing, pen and ink. (Due: 10/23)

WEEK FOUR: 10/21-10/23 Work in class on parallel line drawing. Critique of parallel line drawing.
WEEK FIVE: 10/28-10/30 "Textures" *Bring: Textured objects, pen and ink supplies for in class exercise. -Assignment: Pen and ink drawing (Specimen with complex textures) (Due: 11/4) MID QUARTER PORTFOLIO REVIEW. Turn in all work to date.
View "textured samples" exercise. (Make 18 photocopies to share with class.) Work in class on pen and ink drawing of specimen with complex textures.
WEEK SIX: 11/4-11/6 Critique of pen and ink drawing (complex textures). -Intro to scratchboard. *Bring: Prepared scratchboard, objects to draw (or scratchboard drawing in progress.) -Assignment: Scratchboard illustration (Due 11/11)
WEEK SEVEN: 11/11-11/13 Critique. Scratchboard continued. -Assignment: Scratchboard illustration (Due: 11/18)
