Chemistry - Fall 1998

[CHEM-001M-01][CHEM-108L-01][CHEM-112L-01]

Chemistry 1M-General Chemistry Lab

Chem 1M. This is the 2-unit chemistry lab designed to go with Chem 1B. You must either have previously passed 1B or be taking 1B in the winter in order to take 1M. Be sure to attend the first lab lecture (scheduled in the class schedule). At that time, you will fill out a form saying which times you are free, and within a few hours we will post your assignment to a 3-hour lab period. Both the lab lectures and the lab period are required. The lab manual will be obtainable from the Copy Center.

Chemistry 108 L

This is an introductory course in practical organic chemistry. The main objective of this course is to acquaint students with basic operations used in the modern organic chemistry lab such as: recrystallization, distillation, extraction, and a variety of chromatographic techniques. The students also learn fundamental aspects of organic synthesis and reactivity through first hand experience. Applications to the bio-sciences is especially emphasized in this class. After taking this class, the students can add a whole paragraph to their resumes just by mentioning the techniques with which they hadgained familiarity. These skills are sought by chemical and bio-tech companies.

Chemistry 112L

Course associated with Chemistry 112A. First part of a three-quarter series.Introduces students to most important topics of experimental organic chemistry. The students gain first-hand experience in basic principles, techniques and operations important in the organic chemistry lab such as recrystallization, distillation, extraction, thin layer chromatography, gas chromatography, and infrared spectroscopy. Emphasis is in isolation, separation and purification of organic chemicals. Students also learn principles of organic synthesis. One four-hour laboratory section a week, plus a weekly lecture and a comprehensive final exam.
