Enrollment Appointment FAQs

Q: Why do I have two enrollment appointments for spring enrollment?
A: The campus is piloting a system for enrollment that will allow you to “pass” through the enrollment system twice. In your first pass (appointment), you can enroll in up to 14 credits. In your second pass, you can enroll in up to 19 credits. This system is similar to systems used at many other universities.

Q: Why can’t I enroll in a full 15 credits all at once?
A: During the first pass Juniors, Sophomores and Freshman can enroll in no more than 14 credits. This provides a better opportunity for undergraduates to enroll in at least two classes important to their academic progress.

Most students will enroll in two classes in their first pass for a total of 10 credits -- 14 credits are allowed, however, since many students will also need to enroll in associated labs.

During your second pass, you can enroll in up to 19 credits.

Q: Why do seniors only have one appointment?
A: Seniors will be able to enroll in up to 19 credits in one pass, because of the limited time they have to complete graduation requirements.

Q: How do I figure out which classes to prioritize?
A: You’ll need to ask yourself the following questions to decide which classes to prioritize in your first pass:
            • Which classes are the most important for progress toward my degree?
            • Which classes are prerequisites for classes you need later?
            • Which classes are only offered in the upcoming quarter?

Q: If a class I need is closed during my first pass, does that mean I won’t get to take it?
A: Not necessarily. There are times when a department may choose to gate enrollment in classes so spaces open during enrollment for a specific class level, or during a second pass. If a class you want to take is closed during your first pass, you should sign up in your next- priority class, then try for the class again during your second pass.

Q: Can I be placed on a class wait list?
A: UCSC does not currently employ waitlists. There are times when a department may choose to gate enrollment in classes so that spaces open during enrollment for a specific class level. If a class you want to take is closed during your first pass, you should sign up in your next- priority class, then try to enroll in the class at a later time.

Q: Which classes should I enroll in during my first pass?
A: You will need to prioritize the classes that are most important for your academic progress. For most students, this will be classes required for their major. For some students, this will be writing classes. Still other students may have different courses they need to prioritize. Please contact your College or Department Adviser for assistance.

Q: Can I make changes to my schedule in my first pass after I’ve enrolled?
A: You are welcome to make changes to your schedule as long as you remain below 14 credits total in the first pass.

Q: When can I enroll in more than 19 units?
A: Undergraduates with a cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 may enroll in up to 22 units beginning the first day of the quarter. Students may also enroll in more than 19 units by exception of the college.

Graduate students may enroll in more than 19 units, with approval from their department, beginning the first day of instruction.

Q: I missed my first-pass appointment time to enroll. When can I enroll?
A: Your first-pass appointment time is the first opportunity you have to enroll. You may enroll any time thereafter until the end of the first-pass appointment period. Q: I missed my second pass appointment time to enroll. When can I enroll?
A: Your second-pass appointment time is the second opportunity you have to enroll. You may enroll any time thereafter until the end of the open enrollment period. See the Academic and Administrative Calendar at http://reg.ucsc.edu/calendar/index.html for deadline dates.

Q: How are enrollment appointments assigned?
A: Enrollment appointments are randomly assigned within each class level: Seniors (135+ credits), Juniors (90 – 134.9 credits), Sophomores (45 – 89.9 credits), and Frosh (<45 credits). Students who are eligible for priority enrollment enroll before seniors.

Q: Who is considered a priority enrollment group?
A: Some students may receive a priority enrollment time based on meeting certain campus criteria. Some categories of priority enrollment students include: Regents Scholars, Leadership Opportunity Scholars, Renaissance Scholars, Veterans, Education Abroad Program Reciprocity participants, Visitors, and some Disability Resource Center identified students. If you think you qualify for priority enrollment, please contact the office responsible for hosting the program.
