Procedures for Grading—Graduate Students Grading Options

Students may elect one of two grading options: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) or letter graded (A, B, C, D, F). Grade notations are defined as follows:

A = Excellent
B = Good
C = Fair
D = Barely Passing
F = Fail
I = Incomplete
S = Satisfactory, equivalent to a B or better
U = Unsatisfactory

Courses in which a student receives a grade of S, A, or B may be used to satisfy requirements for a graduate degree (SCR A16.1.1 and A16.1.3, SR 780A).

Grades submitted which are inconsistent with the grading option selected by the student, will be recorded as an interim grade by the Registrar’s Office who will request clarification.

AC = letter grade requested by student, Pass or Satisfactory submitted
NC = letter grade requested by student, Not Pass or Unsatisfactory submitted
GC = Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading requested by student, Pass submitted
Z = grade unknown, no grade submitted

Incompletes

Incompletes may be assigned when the student’s work is of passing quality, but is incomplete (SCR 16.1.4).

Students must complete the course work and petition to remove the I by the end of the third regular quarter following the quarter in which the grade I was received unless the instructor or department specifies an earlier date. Incompletes may not be removed via the Instructor Initiated Change of Grade form, unless the incomplete was a clerical or procedural error and the course work was completed by the last day of the quarter in which the student was enrolled in the course (SCR 16.1.4).

Narratives

Narratives are required for all courses taken for credit and for courses 301 and 311, regardless of the grade assigned (SCR 16.2.1).
